The British town in Shanghai
Thames Town, Shanghai.
This 1 square kilometer town in Shanghai’s Songjiang District was modeled on British market towns and intended to imitate a small English village. Completed in 2006, it is named (somewhat unoriginally) Thames Town, Chinese: 泰晤士小镇(Tàiwùshì Xiǎozhèn)
Quaint as it may appear, the majority of the properties were bought as second homes or by speculators. Since most of these people were waiting for a community to develop or for prices to go up, respectively, no-one actually moved in. As a result the place is a ghost town, frequented only by tourists and the people who serve them.
On the plus side, you can hire a golf cart and speed around the place, which is quite fun!
